Arsenal, the league leaders, have seized an early lead at Molineux, Bukayo Saka heading in from Declan Rice’s cross inside five minutes to end a 15-match goal drought.
The conditions are grim on a cold Wednesday in Wolverhampton and, as reported by Telegraph, home fans are booing Madueke after past remarks about the city while at Chelsea.
Play stopped when Gomes took a stray arm from Saka to the face, he received treatment and was soon back on his feet.
Rice, already with the assist, then surged towards the box and cut onto his right foot, but his effort skidded wide of the bottom corner.
Arsenal should have doubled the advantage when Madueke cut in from the right and forced Sa to parry, the rebound fell to Martinelli in the six-yard box but he could not convert.
Mikel Arteta will be delighted with the start and his side are in complete control, the away goal has hushed Molineux and the demand now is greater ruthlessness to stretch the lead. Wolves have barely laid a glove so far.
