It’s been a difficult start to the season for Mohamed Salah.

He has managed to get himself up and running of late in the Premier League - scoring in successive matches against Brentford and Aston Villa but the Egyptian King hasn’t always been at his best this term.

Last season as the Reds won the Premier League title under Arne Slot, the 33-year-old scored 29 goals and weighed in with 18 assists.

Much was expected from Salah this season - given his status as the league’s top scorer, top assist-maker and best player for 2024/25. Only it’s not worked out like that.

Salah only one piece of the puzzle for Liverpool

Salah is suffering as Arne Slot ushers in a new attack around him - featuring the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.

The knock-on effect of that lack of familiarity has been that Salah is occasionally left isolated in games and unable to weave his magic on a regular basis.

No doubt he is also missing the playmaking capabilities of Trent Alexander-Arnold behind him. Therefore Salah’s form is only one small piece of the puzzle for the Anfield.

He has been so consistent for so long that any drop in numbers comes with increased scrutiny.

Media 'attacks' on Salah are illogical

This isn’t fair, according to his former Egypt international colleague Mohamed Zidan.

Instead of pointing the finger at Salah - a two-time African player of the year - more attention should be paid to the scale of Liverpool’s overall problems thus far this term.

"I think the media in England is exaggerating their attacks on Salah,” the former forward told Al-Arabiya.net.

“Everyone knows what he has achieved over the years, and he will always be a source of great pride for us. What the English media is doing now, intensifying their attacks on him, is completely unnatural and illogical, especially after all his achievements and performances.

"We can't reduce Liverpool's problems to Salah alone. Liverpool as a team hasn't been performing well lately, and Salah isn't the only one whose form has dipped. So it's unfair to place the entire blame on him."

Despite that supposed drop off, Salah has still managed to score four goals in 10 league matches thus far - not a bad return from a player so heavily criticised.
