In a world of social media, we have time and again found our stars to be interactive and even cheeky at times, replying to messages or retweeting a post by fans or media. But Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has taken his game a notch up.
Sky Sports posted a picture on their Instagram account tilted “Mohamed Salah- Keep or Sell?” and left it open for viewers to comment on it. It certainly did not miss the attention of one eager viewer, the man himself, Mohamed Salah. Salah posted three laughing emojis, indicating he has laughed off this suggestion. Although he deleted the comment soon, but not fast enough for fans to not take a screenshot of the said comment.
This has made us put our thinking caps on, and here we take a look at whether Liverpool should cash in on the star player when the transfer window reopens or should the club fight tooth and nail to keep hold of their prized possession.
Many Liverpool fans would hurl at us with brickbats, but let’s be honest in saying that Mohamed Salah has been inconsistent for Liverpool. For every goal of the calibre of his strike against FC Salzburg in the Champions League, there has been a fair number of goals missed which ought to go in from a player of Salah’s stature.
Another negative trait of Mohamed Salah is his selfishness. We have seen his feud with Sadio Mane, and at times his lack of willingness to involve his teammates has cost the club certain goals. Although so far manager Jurgen Klopp has controlled the situation well enough, it remains unknown as to how long will he be able to do it.
Last but not least, Salah’s nature to shoot the ball from long range does not yield the result most of the time. When it seems like passing the ball to a better-placed man would be the wiser option, the Liverpool superstar often looks the other way.
Salah has so far completed two premier league seasons, winning the Golden Boot both the times. Even this season Salah is in contention of winning the Golden Boot, so far scoring 16 goals for the team, only three shy of Jamie Vardy. Hardly has any player from Liverpool has shown this consistency in terms of scoring, and the club simply cannot replace these figures with any replacement that they try to bring in.
Even taking into account the number of clear cut opportunities that Salah misses, he is capable of producing moments of magic that can change the complexion of the game. There are only a handful of players who can score a goal like the one he scored against FC Salzburg. With the kind of money Salah will fetch, Liverpool may get a more consistent player, but the club would struggle to retain that magic.
Going out in the market to seek a replacement for Salah, even with a hefty purse, would be a cumbersome experience as Klopp would have to set his sights on the likes of Neymar and Mbappe. More importantly, with the trio of Salah, Mane and Firmino, Klopp has won the Champions League and now is on the verge of winning the Premier League. So, many may ask “Why change the winning combination?”
