Al-Hilal have been dealt an early pre-season blow, with captain Salem Al-Dawsari set to be out for about six weeks with a knee injury, Al-Riyadiah reports.

The timeframe leaves his chances of playing the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup in Jeddah, from 23 September to 6 October, looking slim.

The two-time Asian Player of the Year is recovering in Finland with his family after successful knee tendon surgery performed by specialist Lasse Lempainen.

The report added he had rejected any talks over a summer move despite having one year remaining on his Al-Hilal contract.

From January the club captain will enter the free period, enabling him to assess offers and decide what best suits his situation.

Al-Dawsari, 34, made 35 appearances last season, totalling 2,447 minutes, 10 goals and 10 assists. His Al-Hilal career now stands at 484 games, with 141 goals and 106 assists.
