Manchester United midfielder Sam Mather has agreed personal terms over an exit from Old Trafford with the Red Devils set to complete their first piece of business of the January window.

Ready for the Next Step

Mather, who joined the club’s academy at just six years of age, is keen to “kickstart his career in the professional game” and wants to cement his place in a first team as an attacking midfielder, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 21-year-old technician, capable of playing on the wing or as a No 10, has outgrown academy football and came close to leaving last summer.

He has trained with Ruben Amorim’s squad for large parts of the season, though there is zero expectation of a first debut. He was a part of United’s FA Youth Cup winning side in 2021/22, alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

In September, Kayserispor were locked in talks to sign the youngster, but the deal collapsed on deadline day in Turkey – 12 days after the summer window shut in England.

A fee and buyback clause were agreed between the two clubs, as well as a contract with the player, but time restraints led to the move falling through.

There has subsequently been interest from sides in Greece, the United States and even the Middle East.

However, Kayserispor – currently 16th in the Süper Lig side – have reopened negotiations with United this month in hopes of striking second time lucky.

Personal Terms Agreed

Kayserispor’s opening offer was not accepted by United, but there is acceptance around Old Trafford that an exit is the best step for their academy graduate.

Reports relayed by TEAMtalk reveal Mathers has “agreed personal terms” with the Turkish side, and that United are now willing to “compromise” in discussions to help facilitate the move.

The Red Devils are understood to be willing to accept a free transfer if a sell-on clause is included in the deal – a common tactic the club have employed when selling young players in recent years.

Kayserispor are keen to “wrap up a quick deal” to enable the midfielder to join their midseason training camp this month.

The Peoples Person expects a deal to be struck imminently.
