Zlatan Ibrahimović and Chris Wondolowski traded braces as the two California clubs split the points at Stanford Stadium.
No one needed to remind Ibrahimović that San Jose is an important fixture for his new club side as the Swede blasted home inside the opening minute.
When the Galaxy conceded a penalty in the 14th minute, former San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham did well to get his right hand down to block Wondolowski’s initial shot but the veteran forward buried the rebound to tie the game on a quarter hour.
French winger Romain Alessandrini retook the lead for LA by whipping a free kick past goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell at the near post in the 20th minute.
Five minutes later Zlatan nabbed his second and his team’s third on another set piece, firing a shot from distance low and out of Tarbell’s reach.

The Galaxy took a 3-1 lead but San Jose cut the deficit before halftime.
Valeri “Vako” Qazaishvili coasted past LA midfielder João Pedro and got his right-footed shot off before defender Michaël Ciani could close him down in the 39th minute.
San Jose earned a second penalty and Wondolowski elected to shoot to the same side but gave Bingham no chance to save this time.
LA Galaxy will be annoyed they let a 3-1 game slip out of their hands even if they still earned a point on the road.
Coming into the night sitting in last place in the Western Conference, the ‘Quakes could have used three points but a comeback win against a bitter rival could spark some momentum moving forward.
