Three Borussia Mönchengladbach players spoke to the media after their 0-1 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg, on the final day of the 2024 / 25 Bundesliga season at Borussia-Park.
Midfielder Philipp Sander was first, and said about the result: “We wanted to end the season on a positive note, but unfortunately, we could not manage to do that. We lacked effectiveness in front of the Wolfsburg goal, especially in the first half; at times, especially for myself, we lacked the composure required, or a one-metre offside would prevent us from leading.”
He added, “We were very unlucky to concede at the back; after that, we ran out of steam right until the final whistle. We are obviously not satisfied with that, and now we need to take a rational look at this season as a whole. There have been developments that have gone the right way for us, but of course, these developments are not complete just yet.”
Defensive midfielder Rocco Reitz said about the result that the club “had a good start to the match”, but that they “allowed Wolfsburg to push us at the beginning of the second half, and we did not fight with enough determination”. He finished by saying, “We need to evaluate the reasons for this together. The fact that we received such incredible support from the fans, even after ending this season with an unsatisfactory result, is remarkable; we are truly grateful for it.”
Head coach Gerardo Seoane said to club representatives that “it was obviously an ending to the season that left us disappointed”. He stated that “we would have loved to give our fans a home victory to finish it”, reiterating what he said on Thursday, and he added that “while we had some decent phases in our game, we lacked the precision required in multiple different situations”. He concluded by saying, “Unfortunately, we lost our momentum in the second half after we conceded - next week, we will sit down together, and assess the season in full”.
Borussia Mönchengladbach finish in tenth place in the German top flight, missing out on the top-half of the table with this result; going into today's match, they were in eighth, but VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen were able to climb a few spots in the table following 3-2 and 4-1 wins against Leipzig and Heidenheim. Seoane's side went 13-6-15 over the 34 matches, with a -2 goal differential (55-57).
