On 27 May 1964 at Vienna's Prater, Inter beat Real Madrid 3-1 in the European Cup final, with Mazzola scoring twice.

After the match, Ferenc Puskas approached Mazzola, said he had faced Valentino and that Sandro was worthy of him, then handed over his shirt.
