Manchester United would ideally like to recruit more than one midfielder in the summer, given the revamp INEOS have planned.

Casemiro has already announced his departure, while the co-owners are keen to bring an end to Manuel Ugarte‘s disappointing Old Trafford stint.

Should both leave, the club would run out of senior options at the base of the midfield, which is why multiple additions are being expected.

As INEOS have shown with their previous transfer dealings, they prefer players with Premier League experience and have created a shortlist which includes three long-term targets.

Sandro Tonali has emerged as a concrete possibility

Carlos Baleba of Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Nottingham Forest talisman Elliot Anderson.

The Seagulls midfielder’s form has plummeted following summer links to United, and INEOS must be wary of splashing the cash to land the Cameroonian in the summer.

Manchester City are leading the race for Anderson, while Real Madrid’s entry complicates the club’s pursuit of Wharton.

This explains why Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has emerged as an alternative. The Italian maestro is keen to leave St James’ Park with multiple clubs chasing his signature.

Sandro Tonali not eyeing a return to Serie A

Recent reports seemed to suggest a return to the Serie A was on the cards for the former AC Milan ace, but The Daily Mail has reported a different take.

They have revealed that the 25-year-old does not view the Italian top flight as the best next step for his career, and prefers to stay in the Premier League.

“Sandro Tonali will NOT be returning to Italy, despite continued speculation. Tonali’s future on Tyneside is not certain, but Italy would appear an unlikely destination if he were to seek a move.

“Again this week there has been talk in his homeland of a summer move to Juventus for the midfielder. However, we understand Tonali does not see Serie A as the stage that will serve his career best in the coming years.

United have perfect chance to pounce

“The 25-year-old appreciates the improvement made in nearly three years at Newcastle playing under Eddie Howe in the Premier League, and attributes some of that to the strength of the English top flight, which has six teams in the Champions League last 16, compared to just Atalanta from Serie A.”

With the Magpies looking likely to miss out on Champions League qualification, United will be fancying their chances of landing Sandro Tonali should Michael Carrick guide the 20-time English league champions to a top-five league finish.
