Although Michael Carrick and the INEOS sporting hierarchy are admirers of Tonali, the overall cost of securing his services has forced the club to shelve any plans for a transfer.
Newcastle are seeking around £100 million to part ways with Tonali, as the Magpies are under no immediate pressure to sell the central midfielder, who remains a key part of their long-term plans alongside Bruno Guimaraes.
Having already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, the St James’ Park outfit are in a strong financial position.
For Manchester United, meeting Newcastle’s asking price is virtually impossible. Despite securing a return to Champions League football for the upcoming campaign, the Red Devils are taking a cautious approach to the market as they look to right the wrongs of recent years and have already wrapped up a deal for Atalanta’s defensive midfielder Ederson.
While United remain in the hunt for at least one more midfielder, Tonali’s financial demands all but rule him out as an option.
Manchester United are now expected to turn their attention to West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes and have started talks with his agents.
With a move to Old Trafford now unlikely, the ‘brilliant’ Tonali still has interest from Arsenal and Manchester City. Arsenal attempted a winter swoop, while City currently consider him a backup option if they miss out on prime target Elliot Anderson.
