Santiago Ascacibar was sent off in the first half as Boca faced Barcelona in Ecuador, a Copa Libertadores 2026 group match. After a VAR review, Colombian referee Carlos Betancur showed the midfielder a red card on 34 minutes. Ascacibar swung to clear without the ball in front of him and caught Milton Céliz on the head.
According to LaNumer12.com.ar, the dismissal left Boca's midfield weakened and they played the second half with 10.
Céliz also left the pitch after elbowing Leandro Paredes.
For now, Ascacibar will miss Tuesday 19 May. Boca host Cruzeiro at La Bombonera at 21.30 in matchday 5 of the group stage.
It is a pivotal date, particularly if the result in Ecuador is not favourable or if Cruzeiro fail to take the upper hand in Chile against Universidad Católica.
A harsher disciplinary report could bring a longer ban. In that case he would also miss the home match against Universidad Católica, and if it extends beyond two matches, a potential last-16 tie.
