Valencia legend Santiago Cañizares has voiced surprise at Braulio Vázquez’s return to Mestalla after a chaotic Sunday that also saw the club dismiss CEO Ron Gourlay and head coach Carlos Corberán, despite nine years building stability at Osasuna.

"I do not know how Braulio Vázquez is getting himself into this mess. He is a great sporting director, a good executive. I do not know how he is getting into this mess," he told El Partidazo de la Cope.

On Sunday Valencia dismissed CEO Ron Gourlay and head coach Carlos Corberán. Gourlay had renewed Corberán at a low ebb of fan backing, and with their futures intertwined Kiat Lim made a clean break. Reserve-team coach Óscar Sánchez will lead the side this week.

Vázquez returns more than a decade after his previous spell, secured via a €290,000 release clause. He had long wanted to come back and had recently shown signs of fatigue at Osasuna.

"He has been here. It is a leap into the unknown. In Pamplona he will have worked well."

"When he comes here he will see how you cannot work here. You cannot work, and with the market already closed. You cannot work. He will have no autonomy, he will have nothing."
