After returning to the bench at the end of 1996, Marcos had few opportunities the following season. He played only 11 matches, but one of them marked his Derby debut. It happened on September 28, in the 1997 Brazilian Championship.

Unusual debut

The first time came in his 27th game wearing the Palmeiras shirt. The debut happened in the second half, and Marcos came off the bench in the second half. After an argument between Velloso and Donizete, six minutes in, referee Ubiraci Damásio de Oliveira, from Rio de Janeiro, sent both players off. In the 9th minute, Oséas, who had already scored in the first half, made way for the man who years later would become part of Derby history.

– When a goalkeeper gets sent off, they usually always take off one of the forwards, right? And I was the one chosen at that moment. On Marcos’ debut, after everything he did, there’s no need to even talk about everything he represented for Palmeiras, right? And for you to come off, and for Marcão to come on in a Derby like that, it definitely showed great character, a huge personality. Palmeiras and Corinthians, there’s a whole lot involved. He was the backup and Palmeiras had Velloso, who was the starting goalkeeper – explains Oseas, in an interview with NOSSO PALESTRA.

Sent off for Corinthians, Donizete is also part of the story of goalkeeper Marcos’ first Derby. For the former striker, the fact that it was a different kind of match contributed to the disagreement between him and Velloso.

– The desire is huge, so we end up losing our heads a little, but it was a sending-off that happened there in all that adrenaline, but nobody wants to get sent off, actually, right? – the striker recalled to NP. Three years later, he wore green.

Frustration and destiny

One minute after coming on, Marcos conceded a header from striker Mirandinha. It was his second goal that Sunday afternoon at Morumbi. Curiously, the finish came at the same goal and on the same side where, almost three years later, the goalkeeper, wearing the No. 1 shirt instead of No. 12, would make his name by saving the penalty taken by Marcelinho in the Libertadores.

Look, Marcos, to me, is a huge reference in world football, Brazilian football, and even more so at Palmeiras. Marcos is a wonderful guy, a leader, a very professional guy, a friend, a partner. We can only speak highly of Marcos, man, he’s a professional beyond measure. I think Palmeiras has to value this athlete a lot, they have to name him the athlete of the century at Palmeiras, for everything he did for Verdão, right?
