Santos earned $500,000 and two extra fixtures by reaching the Copa Sudamericana play-offs, sealed by a 3-0 win over Deportivo Cuenca at Vila Belmiro on Tuesday. They finished second in Group D.

According to Globo.com, the payout equates to about R$ 2.5 million. Progress was clinched only in the final round, and the club will now compete for a place in the round of 16.

The money is expected to bolster day-to-day costs such as wages, with the club struggling for cash flow in recent months. Earlier in May, advancement past Coritiba in the Copa do Brasil added R$ 3 million to the accounts.

In August, Santos are set to play Remo for a spot in the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals, with the first leg at Vila Belmiro and the second in Belém do Pará.

Before the World Cup break, Cuca’s side face Vitória at Vila Belmiro on Saturday at 21:00 Brasília time in the 18th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
