Santos have confirmed the appointment of club idol Elano as the new general manager of youth football. The former midfielder had been technical coordinator at Guarani since May last year.
President Marcelo Teixeira, with his son and Daniel Alves of the Management Committee, met academy heads José Renato Quaresma, Rodrigão and Batata. Teixeira pressed for better results, while coordinators cited limited resources and recent cuts.
Elano will take on a post that does not currently exist in the club’s structure, sitting above the academy’s football manager and below the statutory director, who was not consulted on the hire.
Across three spells, Elano made 322 appearances and scored 68 goals for Santos. He won the Brasileiro in 2002 and 2004, the Copa Libertadores in 2011, and Paulista titles in 2011 and 2012.
He retired in 2016 and joined the Santos backroom staff. As assistant he led nine matches, with five wins, one draw and three defeats. Talks to coach the 2019 Copa São Paulo did not materialise.
In 2017, after Levir Culpi’s exit following the Libertadores quarter-finals against Barcelona-EQU, Elano led the side until the end of the Brasileiro, finishing third. In 2020, as Internacional de Limeira coach, he lost 2-0 at Vila Belmiro, both goals by Raniel.
He has also managed Figueirense, Náutico and Ferroviária, and worked as a television pundit before joining Guarani.
