According to Diario Do Peixe, Santos have progressed a new deal for left-back Rafael Gonzaga, whose current contract runs until 31 May 2027. The plan is to extend it to the end of 2030 and the paperwork is being prepared.

The club are also advancing fresh terms for academy prospects João Pedro, João Sá and Davi Fernandes.

Gonzaga has debuted for the senior side and has been with the first team following the sale of Souza and Vinicius Lira’s ACL injury. For Escobar he is the only natural left-back, with Luan Peres covering and Barreal used as a wing-back.

The coaching staff rate the youngster and are polishing his game. Assistant Vinicius Marques and football coordinator Leo Bastos, a club idol, have been key in managing his step up from the academy.

His representatives see clear potential, while accepting his progress stalled in recent years and that he needs to rebuild confidence.

This year he has played three senior matches, against Fluminense in the Brasileirão and Deportivo Cuenca and Recoleta in the Sudamericana. He has also featured for the under-20s in the Brasileiro and the Copinha, and turned 18 in February.
