Santos race to sign another centre-back before window closes

According to Globo.com, Santos are still chasing a centre-back as the transfer window closes on three March, after loaning Alexis Duarte to Libertad.

João Basso, 29, remains on the books and is close to Neymar, the squad's leading figure, but Vojvoda is not expected to select him unless in extreme need.

The defence is led by Luan Peres, Zé Ivaldo and Adonís Frías, who rotate based on tactical and physical needs, with an academy player sometimes filling sessions.

Vojvoda wants two strong options in every position, so another centre-back is still needed to compete for a place.

The need emerged late. Santos invested in Zé Ivaldo, Adonís and Alexis in the second half of last year and expected the unit to be set with Luan. Alexis did not convince day to day and slipped back, while Basso struggled when used.

Santos aim to register a signing before the first Brazilian window shuts on three March, with the next period only in mid-year.

A domestic-only exception runs from four to 27 March for players who have featured in state championships, but that market does not appeal to the club.

The club view leading national options as expensive or difficult for a team with limited finances, and do not want a gamble. They want someone ready to fight for a starting place.

They are instead looking overseas, or at players out of their clubs' plans who have not played in state competitions, to add someone ready to challenge for a starting role.
