São Paulo bow out of the Paulista with poor defensive stats

Eliminated by Palmeiras in the semifinals, São Paulo ended its participation in the Campeonato Paulista with the worst defense in the tournament. Throughout the campaign, the team conceded 15 goals, a number that placed them alongside Primavera as the most scored-on defense of the edition.

With the two goals conceded in the defeat to Palmeiras, Tricolor Paulista surpassed relegated Ponte Preta and Capivariano, who finished the tournament with 14 goals conceded each. São Paulo managed to keep a clean sheet in only two matches in the state championship: in the 2-0 victory over Santos and the 1-0 win against São Bernardo.

In contrast to their defensive numbers, São Paulo had the fourth-best attack in the Campeonato Paulista. They scored 14 goals in ten matches, trailing only the finalists Palmeiras and Novorizontino, and Red Bull Bragantino.

Poor start with heavy defeats

The turbulent start to the season directly contributed to the high number of goals conceded. The 3-0 defeat to Mirassol in the opener, the 3-2 loss to Portuguesa, and the 3-1 loss to Palmeiras all negatively impacted the team’s defensive record.

Situation in the Brasileiro

In the Campeonato Brasileiro, however, the scenario is different. São Paulo has conceded only two goals in four matches and kept a clean sheet in two games. The team is in second place, with the same ten points as leaders Palmeiras.
