São Paulo prosecutor ‘opened’ probe into Corinthians’ Neo Química Arena debt | OneFootball

The São Paulo state prosecutor’s office opened an administrative probe on Tuesday into how much Corinthians still owes Caixa for the Neo Química Arena financing, amid claims the club may have been overcharged.

TV Record reports that prosecutor Cássio Conserino began the inquiry after forensic specialist Anísio Castelo Branco submitted a complaint and a dossier built from public documents alleging inconsistencies in the application of interest, penalties and fees.

Castelo Branco’s review questions the interest charged on overdue instalments, saying he found monthly rates ranging from 19% to nearly 450% without a clear standard.

The analysis argues Caixa’s calculations could have produced charges above what was due, potentially creating a gap worth hundreds of millions of reais.

Conserino said a possible mathematical error may have added more than R$ 280 million to the bill, which indexed to August 2026 would be around R$ 455 million.

The loan was taken in 2013 at up to R$ 400 million. The report said Corinthians has paid roughly R$ 600 million yet still carries an outstanding balance of about R$ 642 million.

If the figures are confirmed, the club could already have settled the arena debt because of an erroneous assumption made in 2019, according to Conserino. The procedure is at an early stage and will examine contracts, payments and updating criteria before any conclusion.

Caixa said it does not comment on specific credit operations due to banking secrecy, and Corinthians did not respond.
