West Bromwich MP Sarah Coombes has called on the government to help secure an urgent resolution to West Bromwich Albion’s financial charge issued by the EFL.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, Coombes raised the matter in the Commons on Thursday morning, addressing Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Lisa Nandy.
She said supporters are very concerned by reports of a possible points deduction arising from alleged financial rule breaches, which she added the club had strongly rejected.
Coombes warned that with Albion seven matches unbeaten and sitting just above the relegation zone, any deduction that sent them down would be heartbreaking, particularly as the issue seems to stem from a loan taken under previous owners.
Nandy thanked Coombes, referenced her own difficult experiences with Wigan Athletic, and said she understood how much the situation matters to people in West Bromwich.
Legislation passed last July states its purpose is to protect and promote the sustainability of English football.
Albion are set for an EFL hearing after a financial charge related to breaching the three-year PSR limit of £41.5million between 2022 and 2025, which is believed to relate to historic loans from the latter stages of Guochuan Lai’s tenure.
