Sarina Wiegman has provided an injury update on England captain Leah Williamson ahead of their Euro 2025 semi-final with Italy on Tuesday night.
Williamson limped off the pitch during extra-time of their quarter-final victory over Sweden.
The centre-back rolled her ankle and concerns were instantly raised over her participation in the rest of the tournament.
Ahead of England’s meeting with Italy, Sarina Wiegman provided an update on her captain and whether she is available for selection.
Sarina Wiegman said she expects to have a fully fit England squad for their Euro 2025 semi-final with Italy.
It comes after Williamson joined the England squad in training yesterday, ahead of the match in Geneva.
Speaking about Leah Williamson, Wiegman said: “It says she really wants to play, and she did everything to recover as good as possible, and she has, so she could be training today.
“When she recovers well, she’s available tomorrow.”
Lucy Bronze and Lauren James were also spotted limping after the penalty shootout win over Sweden. However, Wiegman quickly indicated that this was due to fatigue.
Sarina Wiegman was also asked about defender Jess Carter during her press conference ahead of England vs Italy in the Euro 2025 semi-final.
Carter has taken a step back from social media after suffering racist abuse during Euro 2025.
“Although it’s a hard situation, Jess is a very strong person, and she wants to move on, too, but she also felt, and so did we, that we had to address this,” Wiegman said.
“You can’t just let it go. So she did, we did, and then we know that there’s a match going on and we want to perform. We’re ready to perform. She’s ready to perform and compete, and that says a lot about her and about the team.”
England are working with police following the comments aimed at Carter. The Lionesses have also decided to not take the knee before kick-off.
In a statement, the Lionesses said that ‘another way’ must be found to tackle racism.
The UK’s top betting sites make England 1/2 favourites to reach the Euro 2025 final, from their semi-final clash with Italy.
Italy are priced at 4/1 to take the victory in 90 minutes, while a draw is 5/2, which would see the game go to extra time or penalties.
