Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri must come with an improvised solution ahead of the upcoming contest, as his midfield department has been completely decimated.
As if the Derby della Capitale defeat to Roma wasn’t painful enough, the match also witnessed the dismissals of Reda Belahyane and Matteo Guendouzi. The Moroccan will skip the next game against Genoa, while the Frenchman was slapped with a two-match ban for dissent.
Moreover, Nicolo Rovella and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru picked up knocks in the first half, so they weren’t able to continue. The Italian opted against undergoing surgery, but has already started a rehabilitation program. On the other hand, the Nigerian suffered a hamstring injury that will keep him out of action for around one month.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Sarri will likely resort to a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1 formation for Monday’s away fixture against Genoa. But while Danilo Cataldi is a guaranteed starter, the identity of his midfield partner remains shrouded in mystery.
Toma Basic is expected to be reinstated into the squad, as revealed by Sarri after the Derby, but it remains to be seen if the manager would be willing to immediately thrust him into the starting lineup, or keep him as an option on the bench.
Matias Vecino has been out of action since pre-season due to a thigh issue. However, Sarri might have hope of recovering his old pupil just in time for the Luigi Ferraris encounter, albeit this could be a risky manoeuvre, especially considering how starting Rovella and Dele-Bashiru (who were doubtful at the time) panned out in the Derby.
Finally, Mario Gila has emerged as a genuine contender for a role in the double pivot. The Spaniard might be a defender by trade, but he boasts enough technical skills to feature in the middle of the park. In this case, Oliver Provstgaard would likely earn a starting role at the back alongside Alessio Romagnoli, although they’re both left-footed.
