Serie A’s sixteenth-placed side Sassuolo have rebuffed Brighton and Hove Albion’s approach for French midfielder Maxime Lopez (25), according to a report from Foot Mercato. The Seagulls were reportedly showing interest for a loan move with an option to buy for the former Olympique de Marseille midfielder. The 25-year-old has played fourteen games in all competitions this season with I Neroverdi, including twelve starts. Lopez joined Sassuolo from Marseille on a loan deal with an option to buy in 2020. A classy and press-resistant midfielder, Lopez is tied to a contract with the Serie A club until 2025.
His first season in Italy was therefore under the management of current Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian head coach would have reunited with Lopez, but Sassuolo have rejected the approach – the Emilians need all their forces to steer clear of relegation and may not find a replacement in time as the January transfer window ends today.
