Sassuolo Seal Early Promotion to Serie A After One Year

Sassuolo is returning to Serie A after just one season in the second division following their surprising relegation in 2023/2024. The Neroverdi have sealed the promotion with five matches to go on Sunday. They have a nine-point lead over second-placed Pisa and a seven-point one over Spezia.

The Emilian side could capture some records if they kept up their pace after conquering their objective. They have led the league from the get-go, collecting 23 victories, 6 draws, and 4 losses.

Sassuolo went into last summer with a precise strategy, keeping as many linchpins as possible, and it worked out beautifully. They convinced most of the stars to stay in Serie B. Andrea Pinamonti and Matheus Henrique were the only noteworthy departures. The first one might return since he joined Genoa on loan.

The Neroverdi have been led in particular by Armand Laurienté, who has scored 15 goals and provided 6 assists, Nicholas Pierini, and Kristian Thorstvedt. Domenico Berardi missed a couple of months at the beginning of the campaign, then hit the net 6 times and dished out 12 helpers.

Sassuolo turned to Fabio Grosso on their bench to try making a quick return to Serie A. It’ll be his first proper stint in the top flight in Italy considering he helmed Brescia for just three matches back in 2019. He gained experience at Sion and Olympique Lyon, but he lasted just seven fixtures in Ligue 1. He previously guided Frosinone for two seasons and change, finishing in first place in Serie B in 2023, but then elected to move on.
