Saudi Pro League: Only Cristiano deserves his hefty salary

For several seasons now, the Saudi Pro League has been attracting football's brightest stars with staggering contracts. But according to the former Saudi Sports Minister, most of these foreign players don't deserve such high salaries—except for Cristiano Ronaldo.

In an interview on Al-Arabiya, Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad was unequivocal:

Ronaldo is the only one who deserves his salary. He brings enormous visibility to the league and the country. The other players are overpaid.

The Prince also warned against an excess of foreign signings: in his view, this could hinder the development of the national team, especially as Saudi Arabia prepares to host the 2034 World Cup.

Ronaldo: a salary that matches his impact

This season, Cristiano Ronaldo is set to earn $280 million (240 million euros) between his contract with Al-Nassr ($230 million) and sponsorship deals ($50 million). At 40 years old, he remains the highest-paid active footballer on the planet. Since his arrival in January 2023, he's already netted 104 goals and provided 21 assists in 117 matches, proving he's truly the only player in the Saudi league deserving of such a massive wage.
