Saúl has returned to Rio de Janeiro and reported back at Flamengo’s Ninho on Tuesday morning following heel surgery in Spain. According to Globo.com, the midfielder has been assessed by the club’s medical staff and will continue his rehabilitation under their care.
He underwent the procedure on his left heel in Madrid on nine January, beginning the initial phase of recovery in Spain. The plan had him stay at least 15 days in Europe before continuing treatment with Flamengo.
The Spaniard was dealing with insertional Achilles tendinopathy, caused by a prominent bone on the heel that produced pain. Surgeons removed the bony fragment to relieve the discomfort.
The issue had bothered him for months and disrupted his run of games for Flamengo.
His return to action is projected at two to three months, depending on his progress. He will only be available after the Carioca, with the Brasileirão already under way, and will miss the Supercopa do Brasil against Corinthians and the Recopa Sul-Americana against Lanús (Argentina).
