SC Heerenveen have announced the signing of Joris van Overeem on a two year deal. The 31-year-old was available on a free since his contract with Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv expired at the end of the 2024/2025 campaign. Van Overeem had been playing in Israel since 2022 after years spent in the Eredivisie. He brings experience of the league and extra depth to SC Heerenveen in the central midfield department.
Van Overeem began his career with AZ Alkmaar and was part of the Dutch squad that won the U17 Euros in 2011. After making two appearances for AZ during the 2013/2014 campaign, van Overeem spent one season out on loan in 2014/2015 at FC Dordrecht. He returned to AZ and went on to make 115 appearances for the side, scoring 13 goals. In the summer of 2018 he moved to FC Utrecht, where he spent four years. In that time he played 116 games, scoring six goals. During his time in Israel the midfielder won the league in and domestic cup in 2023/2024.
