SC Paderborn host SC Freiburg on Saturday, chasing a dream Bundesliga homecoming against in-form visitors. Back in the top flight after six years, it is their first league game at the Home Deluxe Arena since 2020.
They began with a 0-0 draw at Mainz, where 22-year-old debutant goalkeeper Nahuel Noll made several saves and took Man of the Match. According to BuLi News, Ralf Kettemann’s side now hope to turn that point into a first win.
The clubs last met in Paderborn in August 2019, when Streli Mamba struck early before Luca Waldschmidt, Nils Petersen and Changhoon Kwon completed a 3-1 Freiburg comeback.
Kettemann will be without Timur Gayret, Nyamekye Awortwie-Grant, Lasse Eickel, Sven Michel and Felix Götze. Götze had a minor training collision and Sebastian Klaas is also out. Deadline-day loanee Rayan Philippe from Hamburger SV could add attacking depth.
Freiburg opened with a 4-1 win over Werder Bremen at the Europa-Park Stadion. Yuito Suzuki hit a hat-trick and Igor Matanovic also scored.
They had already secured a UEFA Conference League league phase berth, beating Motherwell 3-1 away then 4-1 at home. Derry Scherhant, Matanovic, Cyriaque Irie and Keisuke Goto were on target for a 7-2 aggregate.
Patrick Osterhage is expected to miss out with a muscular issue and Florent Muslija remains sidelined with a knee injury. With depth after early rotation, Philipp Lienhart and Vincenzo Grifo are pushing for starts. This is Freiburg’s first Bundesliga away fixture, and they will look to make it two wins from two.
