Lionel Scaloni addressed the Malvinas banner displayed by Argentina’s players after the 2026 World Cup semi-final win over England and declined to confirm whether he will stay on as head coach. According to SuperDepor.com, he spoke to reporters upon returning to the country.
He said the gesture had not brought any issues to his attention. He also said he was unaware of a dressing-room doorway speech attributed to Lionel Messi that had sparked online chatter.
Scaloni praised the squad’s commitment during the tournament, saying the players gave everything and showed character. He expressed hope that whoever comes into the national team in future gives their all.
He underlined the bond forged with supporters and called the national side a dream stage, describing it as the pinnacle for any footballer.
Reflecting on the homecoming, he said the welcome was remarkable and warm, and added that the group remain noble even in defeat.
On his future, he chose not to elaborate. After the final he had said he was considering stepping aside once his contract ends, and for now he will lead the team in two international windows before year’s end, then decide.
Scaloni took charge in mid-2018 after the Russia World Cup and has overseen four trophies, the Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, the Finalissima and the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
