Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has confirmed that Italy defender Giorgio Scalvini has suffered a set-back in his comeback from a cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, as he has picked up a new injury to his shoulder in training ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid.
Scalvini made a miraculous recovery after rupturing his ACL on the final day of the 2023-24 season. It took him less than six months to get back to top-flight action, appearing off the bench against both Parma and Milan in Serie A in November.
However, while speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Real Madrid game, Gasperini confirmed that the 20-year-old has picked up a new injury to his shoulder.
Reports elsewhere suggest that the Azzurri centre-back had a fall during training, which has led to a partial dislocation of his shoulder.
“Unfortunately Scalvini had a problem with his shoulder today. He had a subluxation, so he won’t be there tomorrow,” Gasperini confirmed on Monday evening.
Though Scalvini will not be available, Atalanta still have plenty of options to chose from when they line up against Madrid.
Gianluca Scamacca and Juan Cuadrado remain out injured, but otherwise, Atalanta have a fully fit and available squad ready to go.
