Turkish football has been rocked by a major scandal linked to sports betting. It has just been uncovered that referees have accounts allowing them to place bets on the very leagues they officiate.

During a press conference, İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu, president of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), revealed alarming figures: 65% of professional referees have an account with a bookmaker, and 152 of them are actively betting on matches.

This revelation spans all divisions, including the Süper Lig, where some of the game’s biggest stars still play. Among the active bettors, 7 head referees and 15 assistants are directly involved.“It is our duty to clean up Turkish football,” declared Hacıosmanoğlu. “We will start by checking all the fundamentals and, if necessary, will call upon government authorities,” he added.

To ensure transparency, the federation is now considering relying more on foreign referees during investigations. This scandal throws the credibility and integrity of Turkish football into question and promises major repercussions in the coming weeks.
