WAZ reports that Schalke and Vitalie Becker have agreed a contract extension to keep the 21-year-old at the newly promoted Bundesliga club for the long term.

His deal had been set to run out next summer, leaving Schalke at risk of losing him for nothing.

Serie A side Lazio had viewed Becker as a cut-price option, but a sale in this window is now off the table.

He will instead begin the season challenging Robin Gosens for the starting spot, with Gosens currently injured.

“I feel comfortable at Schalke. I never said I wanted to leave. I still have a contract. I'm fully focused on Schalke and the current pre-season training.”
