Schalke 04 supporters marked Sunday’s 2. Bundesliga meeting with FC Nuremberg by unveiling a spectacular tifo celebrating their unusual friendship, and the hosts won 1-0.
According to L'Équipe, the choreography began with Schalke’s crest before transforming to reveal Nuremberg’s, a nod to a bond that has lasted nearly fifty years. The clubs are among Germany’s most decorated, with nine titles for FCN and seven for Schalke.
No one is quite sure how the non-rivalry began, despite some 450 km separating Gelsenkirchen and Nuremberg. The most-circulated tale says two Nuremberg fans, Monika and Stefan, met a Schalke supporter, Peter, on a train in 1980, and the trio are said to have agreed to meet at every fixture between the sides.
The relationship grew over the years, producing bi-colour scarves that merge Schalke blue with Nuremberg red. On matchdays, fans mingle in the stands and sing both teams’ anthems together.
Schalke lead the second tier this season and seem well placed for promotion, while Nuremberg sit 11th and have not played in the top flight since 2018.
