After a turbulent winter window in which a departure appeared all but certain, Andreas Schjelderup has finally flourished at Benfica, convincing José Mourinho to back him.
Record reports that Mourinho has drawn the best out of the 21-year-old, who in January marked three years since arriving at the club at Roger Schmidt’s request.
After two underwhelming seasons, and with only a flicker of hope under Bruno Lage in 2024/25, it is this campaign where the Norwegian has started to deliver, recently a key figure again against Alverca.
He was close to leaving before the deadline, first linked with several Italian clubs without agreement. A switch to Brugge was then floated, but the move fell through because of success in the Champions League. Mallorca was also mentioned, but it came to nothing.
This season he has played 28 competitive matches for Benfica, 15 in Liga Portugal Betclic, eight in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal and one in the Supertaça.
Across 1,384 minutes he has five goals and three assists, and he is valued at 14 million euros.
