Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel feels that his side were fully deserving of their point after Wednesday’s 0-0 draw against Atalanta in Bergamo in the Champions League, pointing to Atalanta’s system and their strong goalscoring record at home this season.
Schmeichel said that Atalanta are ‘one of the highest scoring teams at home in Europe, at least in Italy,” during his post-match interview with TNT Sports.
The Dane had an eventful evening protecting the Celtic net, as Atalanta registered six shots on target and 22 total attempts, but were unable to find thre breakthrough over the 90 minutes.
“It was a tough game, we knew it was going to be a tough game coming here,” Schmeichel told TNT. “We had to defend for our lives, we did that and I’m very proud of the boys.”
He then went on to explain why Atalanta provided such a stern test. The Celtic ‘keeper is one of several in recent weeks to comment on Gian Piero Gasperini’s man-for-man system.
“I thought it was an incredible defensive performance. When we did have the ball, we did carve out some chances, but it was always going to be tough against a side that I think are the highest scoring team at home in Europe, at least in Italy I think. So, to come here and get a point is a good point.
“We took a few less chances in the build-up because of their man-to-man system, we tried to exploit that and I though a couple of times it worked, but it’s always going to be difficult going away from home in Europe against a system that’s so aggressive.”
