FC Bayern go into their last Bundesliga match of the year at 1. FC Heidenheim as the heavy favorites. Even FCH coach Frank Schmidt hardly believes in a sensation – but sees a small glimmer of hope
FC Bayern travel to Heidenheim at the end of the year as sovereign leaders of the table – and the division of roles is already clear in the run-up to the game. While Munich remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga and have a large lead at the top, 1. FC Heidenheim are fighting for bare survival. Even FCH coach Frank Schmidt is under no illusions about the scale of the task
Nevertheless, the 49-year-old is not going into the clash with the German record champions entirely without hope. Bayern’s recent performances of all things give the relegation candidates at least a small starting point
Schmidt has clear words when he talks about the upcoming opponents. „It doesn’t get much tougher than this in Europe, in the world,“ explained the Heidenheim coach ahead of Sunday evening’s game. Bayern’s dominance in the Bundesliga is undisputed, even if there have been minor wobbles recently
The 2-2 draw against Mainz 05 and the occasionally tight 3-1 win against St. Pauli at least showed Schmidt „how it can be done, that you can take something away with you.“ The Heidenheim coach identified one weak point in particular: Munich’s susceptibility to set-pieces
But even this glimmer of hope does not change the fundamental assessment. „It’s virtually impossible to beat Bayern,“ Schmidt said openly. At the same time, however, he also emphasised: „The game will still take place.“ A sentence that is intended to reflect the mentality of his team – giving up is not an option
According to Schmidt, Heidenheim need several factors at the same time to have any chance at all. „We have to be courageous, we have to defend deep, we have to switch well,“ explained the coach. Above all, however, they simply need „the momentum in the right place“
This is precisely where the hosts‘ hopes lie: an early goal, a set-piece or a phase in which FC Bayern lose control. However, Schmidt also knows that such moments against a team like Vincent Kompany’s are extremely rare
With eleven points from 14 games, FCH are currently in second-last place in the table. Every point counts in the relegation battle, but points against FC Bayern of all teams – even internally – are hardly realistic. Nevertheless, Heidenheim will invest everything to at least attempt the seemingly impossible
For Bayern, on the other hand, the game is a chance to continue an impressive run. The record champions have not lost their last Bundesliga game of a calendar year for over 40 years. It is also an opportunity to end the soccer year with another exclamation mark and further consolidate their lead at the top of the table.
