Scienza strike lifts Southampton to 15th

Southampton beat Sheffield United 1-0 at St Mary's on Wednesday as Léo Scienza's early winner lifted the hosts from 16th to 15th in the Championship.

In the seventh minute, Scienza drove in from outside the box, picking out the bottom left to put Saints in front.

After the restart, the Blades pressed, with the goalkeeper tipping over Thomas Cannon's header (49.) before denying Mark McGuinness at close range (57.).

Substitute Adam Armstrong added pace (61.), and Scienza's header drew a sharp save from Michael Cooper (68.) as Saints threatened a second.

The goalkeeper made four saves to preserve the clean sheet. The Blades tallied 16 attempts with four on target. Saints registered 15 attempts, three on target.

Next, Saints visit Portsmouth. The Blades host Ipswich.
