Scotland kept their World Cup qualification hopes alive with a dramatic 3-1 comeback against Greece at Hampden Park.
The visitors looked the stronger side for much of the match, dominating possession and creating several clear chances. Kostas Tsimikas fired them into the lead shortly after the hour mark following a rebound from Vangelis Pavlidis’ blocked effort, prompting boos from the Tartan Army.
The Scots responded almost immediately. Ryan Christie struck from close range after capitalising on a corner and a defensive slip by Greece, with the goal standing after a VAR review. The equaliser lifted Hampden’s atmosphere, giving Clarke’s side renewed belief.
Ten minutes from time, Lewis Ferguson’s first international goal put Scotland ahead, finishing from a scrappy free-kick that bounced in the penalty area.
The victory was sealed in stoppage time when Lyndon Dykes capitalised on a calamitous error by Greek goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, slotting home to make it 3-1.
The result represents a significant step towards Scotland securing at least a World Cup play-off place. A win over Belarus on Sunday, combined with a Greek defeat in Denmark, would guarantee Clarke’s men a top-two finish in Group C, keeping their hopes of reaching the finals next summer very much alive.
