Scotland will host Denmark at Hampden Park on Tuesday in a winner-takes-all World Cup qualifying match.
Both teams are aiming for direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Scotland needing a win to keep their hopes alive, while Denmark can secure top place in Group C and automatic World Cup entry with a draw.
Following an intense night of international football, Scotland managed to preserve their qualification ambitions despite a 3-2 loss in Greece, thanks to Belarus pulling off a surprising 2-2 draw against Denmark in Copenhagen. This sets the scene for a high-stakes encounter between the group leaders and their closest rivals.
Despite their defeat in Greece, Steve Clarke’s squad has demonstrated commendable grit in recent matches. The Scots previously triumphed 3-1 against Greece at Hampden and secured a 2-1 win over Belarus on home soil, with key goals from Che Adams and Scott McTominay.
Although the loss to Greece marked their first setback in the qualifiers, Scotland have remained persistent, applying pressure on Denmark throughout the campaign. To date, Scotland has scored nine goals in qualification matches, with both Adams and Ryan Christie netting twice.
Injury concerns persist for Scotland, with Billy Gilmour, Lennon Miller, and Ross McCrorie ruled out of the upcoming fixture. Nevertheless, optimism remains following Scotland’s remarkable fightback in Greece, where goals from 20-year-old Bournemouth winger Ben Gannon-Doak and Ryan Christie pulled the team back from a 3-0 deficit. Gannon-Doak scored his first international goal in the 65th minute, followed by Christie’s headed goal five minutes later off an Andy Robertson assist.
Veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon, at 42 years old, continues to play a crucial role for Scotland. His experience and key saves have been vital, particularly after stepping in for the injured Angus Gunn. Scotland captain Andy Robertson has urged fans at Hampden to offer passionate support from kickoff, emphasising the need for a positive atmosphere. Scott McTominay will be pivotal in Scotland’s game plan, having scored 11 of his 12 international goals in his last 24 appearances.
Possible Scotland starting XI: Gordon; Ralston, Souttar, McKenna, Robertson; McGinn, Ferguson, McTominay; Gannon-Doak, Christie; Adams.
The match will kick off at 7:45pm BST on Tuesday, 18th November.
For viewers in the UK, the match will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland and BBC Two, with streaming access via the BBC iPlayer.
