Scott Gardner saw his Leeds United Under-21s side score three excellent goals away from home to secure three points against Scunthorpe United in the National League Cup.

The Whites went ahead through Harry Gray, before the hosts drew level early in the second half. However, the striker netted twice more to seal a hat-trick, which resulted in the win.

Speaking after the match, Gardner said: “It was really important for us to win tonight.

“With the chances we had in the first half, we should have been three or four up comfortably. I'm annoyed that we didn't score more because our goal difference has got to be massively improved.

“We spoke about playing Boston United and Port Vale this week. We spoke about it being all fine saying we've done okay and played well, but we lost both games and conceded four goals in both.

“So that's the level, that's the difference and they have to step up to it, which they did tonight. But like I have said before, we could have scored more.

“These are the most important games, it's playing against senior teams and we've got a bit of work to do now to make sure we get out of the group so we're going to have to be perfect in the next two games, but this was a good win tonight.”
