‘Sealed, all confirmed’: Fabrizio Romano green-lights Man Utd deal amid Mbeumo bomb

This had looked to be the start of a promising summer transfer window for Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim’s men acted relatively swiftly to seal the £62.5m transfer of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

The Red Devils had looked to follow that up with a move for  Brentford’s talismanic forward, Bryan Mbeumo. However, a transfer package totalling £62.5m was rejected last Friday.

In the meantime, United appear to have turned their gaze inwards to secure the futures of their own top prospects.

Manchester United secure the future of JJ Gabriel

It’s not quite the news the Old Trafford faithful will have been holding out for, but it’s nonetheless welcome!

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that JJ Gabriel has signed a fresh deal with the Red Devils, which will cover him until 2027. This follows further smart business from the club to retain young centre-back Jayden Ngwashi amid the threat of rival interest.

The teenager – given the nickname ‘Kid Messi’ – had allegedly been admired by a handful of United’s ‘rivals’, according to the Daily Mail.

Fortunately, our director of football, Jason Wilcox, and director of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, successfully managed to intervene before a poaching threat could be carried out.

Man Utd need to act to deliver immediate Premier League success

Don’t get us wrong, it’s important that Carrington remains a destination for talent development.

However, none of this will actively address the fact that United had one of their worst seasons on record in the Premier League in 2024/25. Remember, Ruben Amorim’s men secured the club’s worst-ever points tally (42) in the Premier League era last term.

Manchester United don’t just need sound squad-planning for the future – an immediate injection of quality is the minimum target.

With 20 goals in the English top-flight last term (the fourth-most in 2024/25), Bryan Mbeumo would meet that aforementioned expectation.

To put things into perspective, the Cameroonian and Matheus Cunha collectively registered nine fewer goals (35) than United (44) managed to amass in the same campaign.

We need top-quality firepower to propel the side back into the top half of the table and, eventually, back into the Champions League spaces.

If we continue to fail in that quest, wonderkids like JJ Gabriel aren’t going to want to stick around long enough to realise their potential at Old Trafford.

What’s the latest on the Bryan Mbeumo transfer?

Our current understanding of the situation is that Bryan Mbeumo’s preference remains a move to Manchester United this summer.

Brentford’s sporting director, Phil Giles, hinted as much in his discussion with Sky Sports on the 25-year-old winger, but didn’t 100% confirm this was the case.

At any rate, the conditions around the transfer remain unchanged – the Bees want a significant fee for the footballer. Evidently, a package of £62.5m isn’t going to cut it.
