With one week to go before the Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund,FC Bayern is concerned about Konrad Laimer. The Austrian had to be substituted early due to injury during the Telekom Cup match against RB Leipzig. Sporting Director Max Eberl has now provided an initial update following the game.

Laimer had taken a blow early in the match and initially tried to continue playing. Shortly afterward, however, the 29-year-old was unable to continue. The images of him leaving the field were particularly concerning: Laimer could barely walk and had to be supported by a trainer.

After the match, Max Eberl confirmed that the injury was quite painful.

“Konny took a blow relatively early on, and his foot swelled up fairly quickly. That’s why he was taken out as a precaution,” explained the sporting director.

Bayern cannot provide a prognosis for Laimer

The fact that Laimer had to be supported after being substituted was therefore by no means just a precautionary measure.

“It was true that he couldn’t walk anymore; he had to be supported. You could see that. He wasn’t walking normally,” Eberl emphasized.

However, the extent of the Austrian national team player’s injury remains unclear. Even Eberl did not want to speculate on a possible recovery time immediately after the game: “I really can’t say today how long it will take.”

Further examinations should now shed light on whether Laimer has merely sustained a painful bruise or if the injury is more serious.

A race against time ahead of the BVB match

For Bayern, the injury comes at the worst possible time. This coming Saturday, they face Borussia Dortmund in the Franz-Beckenbauer Super Cup—their first competitive match of the new season.

Whether the 29-year-old will be fit in time for the match against BVB remains completely uncertain at this point.
