Mabiala made the breakthrough with a powerful header from Diego Valeri’s corner in the 48th minute.

Seattle responded quickly when winger Víctor Rodríguez got on the end of Nicolás Lodeiro’s cross with a diving header just 3 minutes later.

The home side pushed players forward which allowed Valeri to find forward Samuel Armenteros in space the other way. Armenteros drove at full-back Waylon Francis before firing a quick shot that beat back-up goalkeeper Bryan Meredith in the 57th minute.

Seattle equalized a second time on the night in the 68th minute when Chad Marshall easily won a header about eight yards from goal. Lodeiro added his second assist of the night with decent service swung in with his left foot towards the veteran defender, who beat Mabiala to the ball.

Perhaps feeling at fault for Seattle’s second goal, Mabiala stood to account in the 74th minute. On another corner kick from Valeri, Portland’s French-born centre-back repaid Marshall by rising over him to nod home his second goal and the eventual game-winner.

Portland head home from CenturyLink Field with a win against their bitter rivals for the first time in league play.
