The Seattle Sounders are on a high right now, and understandably so. One of the most popular and widely watched MLS clubs has been quiet for far too long, letting the newbies soak up all the glory.
But, as the old saying goes - Form is temporary, class is permanent. Unlike Inter Miami, Seattle Sounders is a well-established club, and one that's built on a rich, fundamental history.
The obvious gap between the two sides was shown in the Leagues Cup final. Seattle Sounders, despite seeing far less of the ball, never looked like losing that match.
Osaze De Rosario, having only signed for the Sounders permanently this year, opened the scoring for them. The game remained 1-0 for most of the match, until Alex Roldán converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute. No less, Paul Rothrock put the icing on the cake by making it 3-0 in the 89th.
Seattle Sounders have not shut up about the Leagues Cup win, and it's brilliant. They deserve to basque in all of their glory, after they showed that youth trumps experience.
Sure, the Sounders might be one of the oldest clubs in MLS, but their core roster of young players served a brutal message to Miami: Spend all the money in the world, but you could have saved 99% of it and got better returns by fostering youth.
After winning the Leagues Cup, the Sounders became the first team to win every North American title. A historic display, which was made better by the constant Messi trolling.
Lionel Messi is a well-known and beloved Coldplay fan, so he'd have been gutted that Inter Miami tried their best, but they didn't succeed.
Before the game, Seattle Sounders fans were videod exchanging Lionel Messi jerseys for their very own Paul Rothrock jersies. One Sounders fan who took part in the exchange said "They have Messi, but we have Rothrock."
In the Leagues Cup final, one player of the two showed up. Hint: It wasn't Messi.
I mean, Messi did physically show up... which is a complete rarity in and of itself, but the Messi of the past, the GOAT Messi, didn't show up.
Unfortunately, this is telling of his time in MLS. The big-money move for Messi hasn't quite worked out the way that the league would have liked, but it's time to start looking at this glass as half-full.
Sure, Messi isn't the same player he used to be, but there are new heroes in MLS right now. Seattle Sounders are paving the way for a bright future, so perhaps MLS should focus its efforts and attention on the long-term, rather than the short-term.
Plus, we're here for all the marketing ploys Seattle Sounders continue to make. They may have lost money by swapping Rothrock jerseys for replica Messi jerseys, but the savagery and new-age rivalry is what sport is all about.
