Sebastián Córdova, 28, has ended a five-year stint with Los Felinos by signing for the reigning Liga MX champions, Toluca.
The move comes after Córdova failed to earn regular minutes under Guido Pizarro, making six appearances as Tigres reached the Liga MX Apertura final.
His availability caught the attention of Mexico’s best, with Cruz Azul and Pumas also reportedly interested in the midfielder, but it was the appeal of Toluca that caught his eye.
During his five years with the club, Córdova played 129 times and recorded 39 goal contributions. However, with the arrivals of Ángel Correa, Juan Brunetta, and Nicolás Ibañez over the last few years, the 28-year-old’s minutes began to diminish.
By joining Los Rojos Diablos, Córdova is expected to add depth and quality, providing options for Antonio Mohamed, who is expected to lose some of his stars for the Liga MX Clausura playoffs, due to the schedule clash with the FIFA World Cup.
Born in Oaxaca, Córdova started his career in the Alebrijes de Oaxaca academy, before attracting interest from Aguascalientes, where he signed for Necaxa.
Before he had time to make himself a regular first-team player, Córdova made an impression on the Club América scouts and moved to the capital in 2018, after a single season with Los Rayos.
By 2019, he had become a key player for Las Águilas, helping the side lift the 2019 Copa MX title but his best season at the Estadio Azteca came in 2021, where he provided 10 goal contributions in 31 games.
His time at the club came to an end in 2022, where he signed for Tigres.
Córdova found himself an important role in the Tigres midfield and had his best season between 2022-2023, where he scored 11 goals and offered five assists.
For three consecutive seasons, the Oaxaca-native made 30+ appearances for the side, but that was until this current season, where minutes have become hard to come by.
Despite his efforts for two of Mexico’s biggest clubs, Córdova has struggled to earn call-ups to the national team, only making four appearances for Mexico, with them all coming in 2021.
With the World Cup on the horizon, which Mexico will host, alongside the United States and Canada, Córdova will be hoping to find regular minutes, to compete for a place this summer.
