kicker reports that VfB Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß will only move to a club that has qualified for the Champions League, if he decides to leave the MHP Arena in the summer.
The nephew of Bayern Munich’s Uli Hoeneß, is consistently linked with other clubs whether that be Bayern, Bayer Leverkusen as a replacement for Xabi Alonso, or the most recent club RB Leipzig. Hoeneß is linked as a potential successor to Marco Rose, as Leipzig struggle to qualify for the Champions League.
However, Hoeneß wants to continue competing in Europe’s premier competition, so whichever club he wishes to move to next, must be playing in next season’s competition. Hoeneß has a release clause that is worth €8m in his Stuttgart contract that runs until 2027, this clause must be activated by the end of April. It is entirely likely that away from the top two, Champions League qualification is far from given for the clubs currently fighting it out.
The easiest way for Hoeneß to achieve this will be to turn Stuttgart’s form around and help them finish fourth. VfB has struggled for consistency for most of this season, and one of the only reasons they are within touching distance of the Champions League spots is that the teams around them continue to trip up.
Stuttgart are currently seventh in the league and three points off of fourth. At the weekend, they face Bayern Munich and will look to get back on track after losing to Wolfsburg 2-1 and drawing with Hoffenheim 1-1 over the past two matchday.
