Sébastien Pocognoli said that his side “have to believe” as AS Monaco prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
PSG, as the reigning European champions, come into the game as the strong favourites. However, Monaco beat Les Parisiens earlier this season. That was the Principality club’s seventh win over PSG during the QSI era; only Stade Rennais have registered more (nine) in that time.
Les Monégasques also go into the game off the back of a confidence-boosting win, while in contrast, Les Parisiens suffered a demoralising defeat to Rennes over the weekend. After Monaco’s win over Nantes, Pocognoli said that his side were “capable of a surprise”.
He has now revisited his side’s chances as the underdog in tonight’s Champions League encounter.”We have to believe, otherwise there’s no point in playing the match. I think the players are eager to play a great game and give themselves a chance for the return leg,” said the Belgian in a press conference attended by Get French Football News.
He added, “Everyone who plays PSG is in the role of the outsider. They are the reigning champions. Does this role suit us? It is true that in the league, we are often in the opposite role. It is up to us to play freely to give ourselves a chance.”
