Belgian champion in his first season

In his very first season with RUSG, the 38-year-old Walloon coach won both the Belgian Super Cup and the Belgian league title. Pocognoli led Union to their first league championship in 90 years, following a historic Champions’ Play-offs campaign (28 points out of 30), which saw them finish ahead of rivals Club Brugge.

A prestigious victory against PSV in the Champions League

At the end of the 2024–2025 season – which also included a Europa League play-off round appearance (defeated by Ajax Amsterdam) – the Seraing native was named Pro League Coach of the Year. Directly qualified for the Champions League, Sébastien Pocognoli and Union players – leaders of the Belgian First Division after 10 matches – have collected 3 points thanks to an away win at PSV Eindhoven (3-1).

Several previous experiences with young people

Former left-back with over 360 professional appearances across first divisions in Belgium, England, the Netherlands and Germany, the former Belgian international (13 caps) began his coaching career after retiring in the summer of 2021. “Poco” started out with the Union Saint-Gilloise U21s, before moving on to the KRC Genk U18s, and then to the Belgian national U18 team.

Now on the AS Monaco bench, Sébastien Pocognoli will join the Rouge & Blanc on Tuesday at the Performance Center.
