The second trial over the death of Diego Armando Maradona, with seven healthcare workers in the dock, began on Tuesday at a court outside Buenos Aires, attended by the family.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, proceedings are in San Isidro and expected to run for about three months. The original hearing was annulled in May 2025 after a judge was disqualified for secretly taking part in the filming of a documentary about the case, forcing a restart amid significant interest.
Around 10:00 local time, 13:00 GMT, Jana and Gianinna Maradona pushed through about 30 television cameras to enter. Their sister Dalma used a distraction with her lawyer, the high-profile Fernando Burlando, who spoke to the press while she slipped inside.
All evidence from the suspended first trial must be presented again, including witness testimony. The witness list has been cut to a third of its original size.
Psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov arrived first. She is accused of mishandling medication, ignoring adverse effects, and failing to attempt resuscitation. Her lawyer, Vadim Mischanchuk, said he fully trusted judges Alberto Gaig, Alejandro Horacio Lago and Alberto Ortolani, and argued new material rules out intentional criminal liability for some defendants, adding any failings could be civil or administrative.
Neurosurgeon and personal doctor Leopoldo Luque, the principal accused, arrived shortly before 10:00 and declined to answer questions.
