FC Bayern had an unusual training session on Saturday morning. While the team was already preparing for the Bundesliga top match at Bayer Leverkusen, two injured Bayern stars were back on the training pitch at Säbener Straße for the first time

The Munich training ground is normally quiet on away match days, but on Saturday morning the pitch was still a hive of activity – albeit under special circumstances

The club had had privacy screens erected around the training pitches and several stewards guarded the area. The record champions obviously wanted to prevent details of the session from leaking out

Neuer and Urbig back on the pitch

The reason for the lockdown became apparent shortly afterwards: Manuel Neuer and Jonas Urbig completed a training session on the pitch for the first time since their injuries, as reported by BILD

Although both goalkeepers had balls with them, they were still without goalkeeper gloves. Intensive goalkeeper training was also not on the agenda. Instead, the duo completed a relaxed session of around 25 minutes under the guidance of rehabilitation coach Benjamin Sommer

Particularly striking: Neuer wore special support socks to stabilize his recently injured calf

The session is seen as the first step on the way back to training, with both Neuer and Urbig currently working intensively on their comeback

Urbig recently suffered a concussion in the 6-1 Champions League win over Atalanta Bergamo and, according to coach Vincent Kompany, there is hope that the 22-year-old will be able to return to team training as early as next week

However, it is currently unclear whether he will be able to play in a match before the international break at the end of March

Those responsible are planning even more cautiously for Manuel Neuer. The captain is still suffering from a torn muscle fibre in his calf. Coach Vincent Kompany recently made it clear that the 39-year-old will only be an option for playing again after the international break

Until then, Sven Ulreich will remain Bayern’s number one goalkeeper, with the experienced keeper also standing between the posts for the Bundesliga top match against Bayer Leverkusen.
